Dear Captain Plumb,

Thank you for your presentation to the Medtronic audience on Thursday, June 7th, 2007. I had the mandatory honor of being in the crowd that day:) The number of emails, letters, and other expressions of appreciation you receive must be impossible to count. I have no expectation that mine will stand out versus any other. However, I must tell you that I believe you were an instrument of God's will that day.

On numerous occasions, my wife Keri has told me that I had a story to tell. She has believed in me like no other and she continues to contend that I could touch someone's life. I have been in prayer that God would reveal his will for me and show me the path for sharing my life story. I don't know if it will ever been in the venue or on the scale of which you have touched lives. However, hearing you speak about adversity being a terrible thing to waste and the position of parachute packer taking many forms has changed my thoughts of embarrassment and shame of my past life into feelings of inspiration.

You see I am the illegitimate son of an illiterate mother. As my mother searched to bring me a stable home life, her three marriages and the subsequent three divorces provided me only with an education many are blessed not to receive. Statistically speaking, I shouldn't have been in the audience of the world's largest medical device maker this past week. But statistics never take into account intestinal fortitude. This fortitude and God's ever present hand moved me in a better direction. There are a lot of accounts that fill the gaps of my life. But at the end of it all, I graduated Cum Laude from The Citadel, completed my MBA, and had the privilege of hearing an American hero.

My story may never leave the room of a junior high Sunday school class or a local boy's home. However, I want to thank you for the motivation and the inspiration to move forward and start packing some parachutes.

Best regards,

- David Reaney

It is with great excitement that I write to you today.  A friend e-mailed me a beautiful story about Lieutenant Charles Plumb and his meeting in a restaurant with the man who "packed his parachute."  As I read the  familiar name in the story I realized it was the same name as the one that was engraved in my P.O.W. bracelet that I wore faithfully in high school during the Vietnam War.  Somewhere between 1969 and 1973 I bought a small silver cuff bracelet as a fundraiser.  It was  engraved with  "LT. J. CHARLES PLUMB JR., 5-19-67" .  I wore it faithfully and prayed daily for the safety and safe return of "my prisoner" as did  most of the girls I attended school with. We all had bracelets with the  names of different prisoners.  How happy I was to catch the evening news to see a clip of Lieutenant Plumb being greeted by military personnel after his release.  I still have the newspaper article showing  Lt. Plumb at Clark Air Force Base.  I always thought it was more than a coincidence that I was able to see him on T.V. and see the newspaper article! And now, all these years later to open an e-mail about him!  Amazing.  I did a "google search" and found the wonderful site that gave me this e-mail address. I've moved at least five times since high school and have certainly lost or misplaced many things.  But for some reason this bracelet and article always stayed safe.  I am wearing the bracelet today and will continue to do so remembering Lt. Plumb in my prayers now as I did before.  I am both proud and honored to wear it. I would like to think that my prayers then helped him stay strong during the dark days of his captivity.

Thank you Lt. Plumb.

Sincerely,

- Lisa (Roma) Roberto

Dear Captain Plumb,

I just received this morning an e-mail from a friend that explained the story of the sailor who cared for the parachute that saved your life. This story touched me very deeply and entered in my life whit a very good timing. I am getting through an hard time at work (though it is nothing compared to what you lived in Vietnam!) and  your story gave me courage and motivation that I needed to walk again whit my heads up . The fact that somebody took the time to send me me this story gave me the good answer : someday cares of me and I am important for someone.

We never know where and how the response will come. Who could imagine that a 44 year old French Canadian could be comforted by the message of an American war hero living in California? That is the miracle of living. I can assure you, dear Captain Plumb, that your message will be transmitted to all my friends and loved ones.

God bless you Captain,

Sincerely,

ps : Please excuse my poor english!

Captain;

I am not sure if you remember me or not.  Several years ago, I had gone through a tough spot and recall I had come across your talk given at the Naval academy about choices and parachute packing which changed my life.

I am in the middle of the prison I have built for myself (and working my way out)as I have been out of work going on 3 years.  During past year, I have lost over a $500,000, my family through divorce and have had thoughts of being one of society’s discarded souls for standing up and reporting a flaw in an accounting procedure.  But through all that, I cannot tell you how many parachutes I continue to pack….

I think of the friend from high school I helped 2 years ago.  You see, they lost their job and was all alone as a 40 year old and out of work.  I flew to Chicago using frequent flyer miles and gave her your tape to think about and reflect upon.  She has since gotten married, found the man of her dreams, and found a company that appreciates her abilities as a CPA  and her expertise to handle the reporting of the financial events.

I reflect on the friend form college who went through the ugly divorce with her child and the uncertainty they faced.  What bravery she endured to find a new career after her place of work closed after so many years. She has since married to a man that loves her and her child as any father/husband would.  And she is so happy, knowing that these prisons are just a moment in time.

I think about the man I saw in High Point, NC (you see, High Point use to be the furniture capital of the world, and most of the furniture companies have moved their operations to China in search of cheaper labour) as I was headed for a job interview sitting on the sidewalk.  When I passed by after the interview, I saw him still sitting there. I pulled over and asked him if he was ok and if he needed anything.  He said he was waiting for the owner of the shop he was sitting next to and sure could use a couple of dollars.  I went back to my car and gave him a 10, remarking that he couple of dollars was not going to help him much.  He remarked, “I do not know who you are, but you sure have a good heart…”.  I told him who I was was not as important as what I was, someone who cares about the people around him and that I was packing his parachute.  I gave him a hug and a blessing and wished him well.

I know you are a very busy man and have endured so much sitting in the Hanoi Hilton for so many years.  Yet, I think it Is important to tell you all this, not for a justification of the works or deeds that I have undertaken, but to let you know that all those years you spent have made an impact on someone else.  You see, even in my current situation, I still see it as a vital part of the human experience to help others and where applicable, “Pack their Parachute”.  Maybe they will help some else…

Thank you so much for what you do and from those of us who get it… May you and your family be blessed during this season and the times to come.

Sincerely,

- James Farmer

I just attended Charlie’s presentation today with Raymond James in Tampa Bay. It was a superb personal testimonial on overcoming adversity and keeping on keeping on!  My late father joined the Royal Navy at seventeen, became a Engineer and Submariner, he was a very good father and a man of integrity, I heard the term keep on keeping a few times! 19 years later I still miss my father, but thank- you Charlie for sharing and allowing me to “push the wire back”. I will use Charlie’s talk to help me be a better servant to God, my wife, my children , my clients and my firm.

Thank you and may God bless your country…

Sincerely

Dear Captain Plumb,

I am a social worker for the Poplar Bluff, Missouri, VA Medical Center. I went to see you, yesterday, at the St. Louis VAMC, having no idea who I was going to listen to, other than a “motivational speaker.” What I did not know, was that I was going to have the opportunity to listen to someone who was prepared to give his very life for my freedom, my children’s freedom, my future grandchildren’s freedom, etc… For that, I am forever grateful. God has truly blessed you with the gift of inspiring others to step out of our mental boxes & to humbly thank those, in our lives, who prepare our parachutes. Thank you, Captain Plumb, for your service. May God bless you, your family, & the United States of America.

I teach a vocational education class in banking and work as the human resource director for an independent bank in the high desert of California.  I saw Captain Plumb’s video while taking classes for my teaching credential at Cal State San Bernardino.  My professor, Ron Pendleton, also a pilot during Viet Nam, gave us the opportunity to view the video.  All of our 235+ employees have seen the video. I present it to my banking classes each semester. I think I have seen the video at least 50 times. I always come away with a renewed feeling that my problems are not as horrific as I had imagined. I frequently use the phrases about packing parachutes and needing mine packed today! I have used it in my personal life. I have tried to instill in my 29-year-old daughter that recent events in her life that seemed catastrophic at the time may have been a blessing in disguise.  If she can learn from her mistakes…bad choices, she can certainly better herself and maybe find a way to help others get out of similar situations while she goes on and raises her own children. She has seen the video. It helps to re-enforce the concept of choices we all have.

Thank you, Charlie Plumb. You are an inspiration.

After three years the girl I had hoped to marry one day called the relationship quits. My emotions were very similar to Charlie's in that prison cell: why me? Why is this happening to me? This isn't my fault!  My life was over. I was lucky enough to get this girl, seeing as how my very shy demeanor was like an anchor keeping me from venturing into other waters.
In other words, I was afraid to meet new people.

It was my grandfather who introduced me to Charlie; he gave me a copy of a recorded broadcast from the "Focus on the Family" radio program from back in May of 2003 that included a speech Charlie gave in Milwaukee to a church. ( This tape is now available on the website www.CharliePlumb.com ) I listened to it and I instantly felt better. I would not be a victim of circumstances beyond my control. I would tap into that higher power. But most importantly, I was going to not be afraid any longer to tug on a few wires.

Only a few days after the breakup, I decided that I'd better get going and apply Charlie's teachings - I simply REFUSED to cry for the next year as I attempted to mend my broken heart. Being a college student, I am around many girls. There was one in particular that came into one of my classes, said "Hi," then sat directly behind me.

As Charlie said, I kicked down what was left of my comfort zone, and I gave the wire a tug. I introduced myself and shook her hand, and it was received warmly. Now, I was not so naive to think that nine days after ending a three year relationship I was going to find the girl of my dreams. But what DID happen was I found she was a recruiter for a business student organization where, as she put it, "you can meet some really great people." That was my opportunity, that is that one door down a long hallway that was creeping open - one that had not have opened had I not been single.

I could not not thank Charlie enough for packing my parachute! He has made my being blown out of the sky so much better.

Bravo Zulu, Captain Plumb!
Very Respectfully,
Robert F. Johnson Jr.

Sir,

My name is SGT Mark Russak. I have recently returned from an 18 month Combat deployment in the Al Anbar province of Iraq will "Task Force Panther". After the attacks of 9-11, at the age of 40, I returned to the military after a 16 year break in service with the Pa. Army National Guard. I served as the Senior Line Medic for Bravo Company, 1st of the 125th Infantry. I ordered your "Parachute Packers" tape from Focus on the Family about a year or so before I left on our mission. Your story and wisdom were a true blessing from God, not just for myself but also for the men I served with in Combat.

Threw tragedy and death I would not allow the men Bravo Company to become negative and feel sorry for themselves. We talked, prayed and supported one another threw every memorial service. We would not allow the deaths of our brothers to be used as an excuse for failure later in life. I can only pray that they all continue to drive on and I check on them regularly.

If not for my faith in Christ I would not have been able to face the day to day uncertainty of life outside the wire. Because of his love, grace and strength that he provided, I was able to focus completely on our mission. I thought of your situation and that of your fellow POWs many times while I was in Iraq. Knowing what you all had to over come was an inspiration to me. I took full advantage of the provisions the Lord had blessed me with; a strong military wife, many supportive friends, family and strangers. The Lord also gave us an incredible Chaplin LTC Doug Etter to strengthen us in God's word.

Your message of "Choices" is one that I've echoed since the first time I heard your tape and I pass it on to all that I meet in life. We all choose our own attitude in life's testing and in knowing the Lord it should always be positive.

Thanks again for being such a great inspiration,

SGT Mark Russak

I recently attended a corporate training session and Captain Plumb's "Overcoming Adversity" video was shown to our group.

I'm 31 years old, and up until now, I thought that I was living the best I could. I was the guy who would chase down the car that cut me off, just to give him an earful. I was the guy who would be angry at other people and let that emotion direct me in the decisions that I made. I let people that I didn't even know dictate my feelings and emotions. That's how I thought everyone lived and saw life. I was normal, living the normal way.

After the video, I really thought hard about what Captain Plumb said. Was I REALLY living happy? Had I allowed myself to fall victim to negative thinking and living? Was I packing parachutes or just stuffing them? As I thought about more and more, I realized that I was very negative, angry and guilty of stuffing instead of packing. It has already begun to change my outlook in life. I thank God for my beautiful wife and son, for my health, for everything I've seen and been through over the years. I never realized how many people needed my support. I only worried about me.

Thanks to Captain Plumb's riveting speech and analogies of his experiences and how they shaped his way of thinking, I was able to take something more than how to succeed in the corporate world. I was inspired to see how blessed I really am, and a new way of viewing life and it's obstacles.

I am truly grateful that Captain Plumb's stories were introduced to me. They will play a role in my life every time I face hardship and happiness. Thank you Charlie, you have helped change my life for the better. I am now starting to truly see and feel happiness inside myself.

Several years ago (8-10-12 maybe) I heard Charlie Plumb on Focus on the Family with Dr. Dobson.  Captain Plumb overwhelmed my life.  During the years I often prayed for him and never, never got this man off of my mind, his testimony made that big of a impact on my life.  Now remember this has been going on for years...

In January, my daughter was applying for a military scholarship.  As she thought about the essay question that was required (Which military leader would you like to meet and why?), she sought out different leaders and sources (which included her dad, he served in Desert Storm and 18 months in Iraq) and others.  I told my daughter Nikki, to hold on, I had something she needed to listen to.. I had keep the tape I ordered from Focus that many years ago. Needless to say, she was impacted so much by his prison captivity and his faith to God, that after praying she decided to write her essay on Captain Plumb.

I now know GOD had a over all plan for our family, by me not forgetting Captain Plumb.  Nikki received a letter yesterday that she had won the $1500 scholarship.  We praise God for his blessing to us, but also to Captain Plumb's life that impacted the Murchison's family.

By the way- when I put the stamp on the scholarship form, I just prayed that whoever read Nikki's essay would be impacted like we had.  GOD IS SO GOOD!!!!  If ever in the Montgomery, Alabama area, you can bet we will be there to thank Captain Plumb in person.

Morning Susan,

I hope you can get this to Captain Plumb for me.

I am a Deputy Sheriff in Brevard County, Florida and 3 days ago I was involved in a police shooting where the suspect was killed during an armed confrontation with my partner and I. I was the one who actually shot the individual. I just wanted to let you know that I saw a video of you speaking about 8 months ago during a training session and it moved me enough to go buy you book. At that time I started thinking more about packing my parachute properly and I began mentally training myself. Over the past days all I have heard is how mentally prepared I was for this. After 3 days, I am already back on the job and doing fine. I never stressed once. I knew my shoot was clean and I was at peace with what I had to do. I went home that night and my wife was asking me how I was doing and out of no where I said "I'm fine. I packed my parachute right." My wife looked at me weird like "you weren't wearing a parachute." At that time it hit me where I had heard and read that. I explained to her about you and she understood. I just wanted to let you that a 3.5 year Deputy on the space coast of central Florida heard your words and took them to heart. So thank you and have a Merry Christmas.

I just wanted to take a moment to say "thank you".  Thank you for your service and sacrifices for our Country, and for the inspirational video that I recently had the pleasure and enjoyment of watching.  While taking a Management course for Public Safety Professionals at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center, our instructor showed us one of your videos.  It blew me away.  I am a Sergeant in the Uniform Patrol Division for the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office with nearly 8 years of service.  I was recently filling the billet of a Lieutenant as a watch commander and just recently turned the shift over to a new Lieutenant.  I had no issues with turning it over, particularly to the new watch commander.  I had worked for him when I was a slick sleeve and he was my Sergeant.  However, I had questions about where I was going.  I had been promised a position as watch commander over a specialized unit and then, as I took over as watch commander for this shift, that position was filled by someone junior to me.  I now had to return to being a shift Sergeant without the possibility of a position with more responsibility and challenges.  I was fairly downhearted about returning to this situation.  However, I am one that believes that everything happens for a reason.  After watching your video, I new why this had happened.  I am back to supervising few people and in a more "hands on" situation and out of the office that had bound me.  Now, it is my opportunity to "pack the parachutes" of the younger officers that report to me.  I had missed, so much, the days of training new officers as a Field Training Officer.  Now, I had the chance to get back to it.  I get the chance to give them the skills and knowledge that will make them more efficient and effective officers and may even save their life or the life of someone else.  I also get the opportunity to leave my office and get out and do the job I signed up for nearly 8 years ago.  I get to make traffic stops, make drug and DUI arrests and make contact with other citizens of the county on calls for assistance.  I have returned to my assignment as shift Sergeant and wanted to take a moment to let you know that all is well.  Thank you so much for showing me that the choices are mine and making me realize that it's my turn to "pack parachutes", by those officers that packed mine as I was coming up here and the Petty Officers and Commissioned Officers that helped me in my way through my tour of duty in the Navy stationed on the USS Independence!  Thanks again.  Many returns and following seas!  Anchors aweigh shipmate!

"From the preparation to the audience reaction, you grade was excellent. You took Rob's information and weaved it perfectly into your talk. You gave us many messages and words of inspiration. In each one of us there are the elements for success if we choose to use them. Our adversity in our daily lives becomes miniscule in comparison to your experiences in North Vietnam. Your positive spirit in meeting your challenges can be an example for us."

I thought I would share a little story with you.

I returned to CT from AZ following your very inspirational presentation.  For the rest of the day during my flight I was hard-pressed to be annoyed with any long lines at the airport, uncomfortable seats, and the occasional inconvenience of travel.  Your life history made me reluctant to be bothered by anything.  You must never be bothered theses days.  After what you went through nothing can stack up to that.  Well, when I returned home to the 35 degree weather of CT I made my long drive home from the airport at 1am to my little house.  I must tell you, your speech was the only thing that allowed me to sleep that night.  I came home to find out my oil tank was empty and it was 39 degrees in my house.  As I laid down on my frigid leather sofa after almost 10 hours of traveling, you came to mind.  I thought to myself, “compared to what Plumb went through, this is nothing.”

I am glad your home safe and sound after reading about your parachute story.  I am a financial planner dealing only with seniors and my closing story at my monthly seminars is to tell your parachute story and transfer the question to a financial parachute, and who is packing the parachutes?  I see a lot of financial parachutes that are so poorly packed that they will not open at all or there will be big problems or costs trying to get it open.

May God continue to bless you and make you prosper as you share your story to others who need to see who is packing their parachutes.

I had the pleasure of hearing you speak several years ago at a company sales meeting. I was so touched by your story that I ordered your book, I'm No Hero. Even though I  read it over 15 years ago, several of your survival stories have remained fresh in my memory and have continuously inspired me through the years. I have to add that I am an avid history buff and have collected many autobiographies from other soldiers who have served honorably as well. (Many of whom who served in Vietnam and were prisoners at the Hanoi Hilton too).

Several weeks ago my son received a book report assignment for 7th grade. I suggested your book and recommended that we read it together. My 12 year old was hesitant at first. (I believe the last book I read to him green eggs and ham).

Reluctantly, he agreed and reading your book became a labor of love. Your book presented many valuable life lessons for us to discuss. I know that your amazing story will remain with him and serve him as it has with me, and someday he will be blessed to read it to his son.

I hope you are doing well and that you continue to be an inspiration for future generations for many years. And you truly are an American hero!  And yes, my son get an "A."
